TALK SHOW CHECKLIST For use only on approved talk shows! MASTER CONTROL: 1. Take all console pots out of mono. 2. Press the DUMP button. This will clear the delay. 3. If CD1 is not in use, select the B input on pot 4, raise the pot to the zero mark, and turn on the red button. If CD1 is in use, wait until another source is on the air to proceed. 4. When nearing talk show time, take all console channels not on air (or due to air soon) out of Program and put them all in both Audition and Mono. 5. If there will be someone in Production to answer calls from there, take pot 12 out of Audition. If not, take pot 11 out of Audition. Remember, calls can be answered from Master Control by using the Answer/Hang up switch next to the Dump button. The red light on the phone will flash for 4244 to indicate when there is a caller. 6. Busy-up 4242 and 4243 by calling one from the other and then putting both on hold. 7. Before show time, set up Production and the News Booth as detailed in the following sections, then proceed with the section TO GET INTO DELAY. IN PRODUCTION -- WITH HOST LOCATED THERE 1. Put pot 12B (MC Aud) in Audition, pot up and turn on channel. 2. Put pot 1A (Microphone) in Program and Audition, and pot up. 3. Put Pot 10B (Phone) in Program only, and pot up. 4. Test the phone by flipping the Answer switch and turning on pot 10. If you hear a dial tone, good. If not, check that the phone equipment is on, and check your settings. Turn off the phone answer switch and pot 10 once it's working. 4. Select P-Dly on the monitor buttons for speakers and headphones. You will not hear anything until the engineer in Master Control begins using the delay. This is normal. IN PRODUCTION -- NO HOST THERE, TAKING CALLS FROM MASTER CONTROL 1. On the patch bay, patch both points marked 'A' to each other. Patch both points marked 'B' to each other. 2. In Master Control, verify that when you flip the phone Answer switch and put pot 11 in cue, you hear a dial tone. IN THE NEWS BOOTH 1. Take the 5158 phone in the news room off hook. 2. Put the headphone amplifier into Pre-Delay. You will not hear anything until the engineer begins using the delay. TO GET INTO DELAY 1. It is easiest to get into delay between two carts, so that is how you should plan the last few items before show time. If you want to substitute other sources for carts, you may if you feel comfortable with the concepts here. 2. Put cart 1's pot in Program/Not Audition/Not Mono. Cart 2 should be in Audition/Mono and Not Program. 3. At the appropriate time, play Cart 1. About one second before cart 1 ends, press the Dump button. 4. When cart 1 is over, start Cart 2. The sound may start late, which is all right. 5. Immediately switch speakers and headphones to Mono! When you hear Cart 2 end, begin the talk show. TO GET OUT OF DELAY 1. Play some theme music or cart that will be the last item of the show. Once it starts, switch the speakers and headphones to Air. You will hear the delayed version of the same item. 2. Decide what will play after the current item and put that pot back in Program. 3. When the current item ends, start the next item in Program and immediately pot down the delay on pot 4. 4. Reset all pots to Program/Mono and Not Audition. DUMPING OUT OBSCENITIES 1. If someone says something you do not want to air, briefly but firmly press the Dump button once. You have 7 seconds to press the button, so do not panic. 2. Once you press Dump, your delay time is very short! Take steps to ensure that the caller will not say anything bad again because you will have much less time to dump. If necessary, turn off the phone on the console so the caller cannot be heard until you are comfortable that the situation is under control. Otherwise, hang up on the call. 3. It takes two full minutes for the full delay of 7 seconds to be restored.
